Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (1998)
About Harry: 11 years old and in his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The milieu: Considered the most lighthearted of the books. The orphan Harry discovers he’s a wizard. At home, he lives with the dreadful Dursleys. At school, he meets friends (Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger); professors (headmaster Albus Dumbledore, deputy headmistress Minerva McGonagall, gamekeeper Hagrid); and enemies (Lord Voldemort, so evil he’s referred to as "You-Know-Who.")
The central conflict: Harry learns Voldemort killed his parents and gave him the lightning bolt scar on his forehead. The powerful Sorcerer’s Stone cannot fall into Voldemort’s hands.
Movie released in 2001; now on DVD.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (1999)
About Harry: 12 years old and in his second year at Hogwarts.
The milieu: The wizard world seems slightly more complex, suspenseful and ominous. Introduces the theme of people’s worthiness to study magic based on their having muggle (non-magical) or wizard ancestry.
The central conflict: Who is turning Hogwarts students to stone? The answer may lie in the legendary Chamber of Secrets.
Movie released in 2002; now on DVD.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (1999)
About Harry: 13 years old and in his third year at Hogwarts.
The milieu: The mood is more psychological. Introduces dementors, who suck happiness from people. Whenever Harry is in contact with dementors, he hears the screams of his parents and begins to understand what happened to them when they died.
The central conflict: Sirius Black has escaped from a terrible prison (Azkaban, which is guarded by dementors) and appears at Hogwarts, trying to find Harry. Is he friend or foe?
Movie released in 2004; now on DVD.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2000)
About Harry: 14 years old and in his fourth year at Hogwarts.
The milieu: The wizard world becomes more complex, and it’s much bigger than imagined. Opens with Harry going to the Quidditch World Cup, a match that attracts wizards from around the world. Introduces Death Eaters, followers of Voldemort. But romance, too, enters the picture: Harry develops a crush on Cho Chang.
The central conflict: Someone puts Harry’s name into the Goblet of Fire, and, even though he’s underage, he’s selected to participate in the Triwizard Tournament, a contest of the three largest European wizard schools. Who put Harry’s name in the goblet — and will he survive? Someone dies.
Movie due Nov. 18.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2003)
About Harry: 15 years old and in his fifth year at Hogwarts.
The milieu: Political overtones: The wizardry world is in disarray. The Ministry of Magic tries to discredit Harry. We start to see a darker, moodier side to Harry. His romance with Cho Chang continues. Classes are important; Harry must pass his exams to go to the next level of magic.
The central conflict: Harry goes around telling people that Voldemort has regained his powers, but no one seems to believe him. Yet, Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore brings back the Order of the Phoenix, set up to fight Voldemort. Someone dies.
